BY-LAWS

Concessional Membership

By-Law 1: Any pensioner, on production of a concession card, shall be eligible to pay his or her subscription annually at a concessional rate.

Subscriptions

By-Law 2: In accordance with Rule 8 of the Constitution, the following subscription rates shall apply per annum:

  1. Junior Member (17 Years and under) or Concession card hold $10.00
  2. Adult Member (18 Years and over) $20.00
  3. Family Membership (2 Members or more) $30.00

Membership Application Forms

By-Law 3: A person applying for membership of the Society shall provide the following information to the Secretary of the Society:

  1. the applicant's name;
  2. the applicant's postal and residential address;
  3. the applicant's telephone number;
  4. the category of membership for which the application is being made; and
  5. the applicant's signature and the date upon which the application is signed.
  6. the applicant or guardian shall be member of the meeting venue if required.

Table Show Rules

By-Law 4: The rules and pointing procedures applying to Table Shows shall be those set out in the Handbook of the Society as may be amended from time to time by the Committee.

Breeders' Awards Programmes

By-Law 5: The rules and pointing procedures applying to Breeders' Awards Programmes shall be those set out in the Handbook of the Society as may be amended from time to time by the Committee.

Society Sales

By-Law 6: Wares offered for sale by the Society shall be sold only to financial Members of the Society for their own principal use.

Society Auctions:

By-Law 7: Only financial Members of the Society shall be permitted to submit items for the Society auction. Any person, whether a Member or not, may bid at such auctions.

By-Law 8: Except with the permission of the Vice-President, no Member shall submit more than six lots at any one auction.

Election Nomination Forms:

By-Law 9: Written nominations for vacant positions on the Committee shall contain the following information:

  • the name of the Member nominated;
  • the position for which that Member was nominated;
  • the name of the Member making the nomination;
  • the name of the Member seconding the nomination; and
  • the-signature of the Member nominated and the date upon which that Member provides his or her signature.

Permitted Fish Species

By-Law 10: No Member shall offer for sale at Society auctions or advertise at Society Meetings or in any publication of the Society any species of fish or plant prohibited by relevant legislation.

General committee roles

By-Law 11: Committee members may fulfil roles including those described below. These roles can be filled by more than one person : 

Duties of Breeders' Awards Chairperson

The Breeders' Awards Chairperson shall:

  • Encourage the breeding of fish by Members of the Society;
  • Maintain records of fish breeding by Society Members;
  • Administer the Breeders' Awards Programmes in accordance with the By-Laws of the Society;
  • Present awards for achievement in fish breeding to Members of the Society, and
  • Preside over any sub-committee which may be established in relation to fish breeding.

Duties of Librarian

The Librarian shall:

  • Encourage the use of the Society library by Members of the Society
  • Ensure that the library is available for the use of Society Members at regular GMs of the Society;
  • Maintain records of borrowing by Members and ensure that books are returned promptly;
  • Recommend to the Committee publications for purchase by the Society for the library, and
  • Maintain a catalogue of items held by the library.

Duties of Editor

The Editor shall:

  • Be responsible for the publication and distribution of the journal of the Society, which shall normally be published quarterly,
  • Encourage Members of the Society to contribute material to the Society journal,
  • May with the approval of the Committee correspond with kindred organisations with a view to the mutual exchange of journals.

Duties of Public Relations Officer

The Public Relations Officer shall:

  • Endeavour to ensure that participants in the aquarium hobby within Canberra and surrounding districts are made aware of the existence of the Society and how the Society may be conducted, and
  • Ensure that all GMs and other activities of the Society receive widespread publicity within guidelines approved by the Committee.

Duties of Junior Representative

The Junior Representative shall:

  • Ensure that the Committee duly considers the opinions and rights of junior Members of the Society, and
  • Assist in the activities of the Society.

Duties of General Committee members

General committee members shall:

  • Assist in the activities of running the society

Judging and Awards

By-law 12: Judging and Awards

  • Judging at shows shall be in accordance with the By-Laws of the Society. Judges shall be appointed by the Vice-President. The Committee shall determine the prizes or awards to be made in respect of such shows.
  • Awards made under the Breeders' Awards Programme shall be in accordance with the By-Laws of the Society.

Society Sales

By Law 13: Society Sales

The Committee shall determine the prices at which any wares purchased by the Society for resale shall be sold. The eligibility of persons to purchase such wares shall be in accordance with the By-Laws of the Society.

Intoxicating Liquor

By Law 14: No person shall bring to or consume intoxicating liquor at Meetings of the Society without the permission of the Committee.

Inappropriate behaviour

By Law 15: Any person attending the meetings is expected to behave in a respective and appropriate manner. Any person deemed to be acting inappropriately by the Committee may be asked to leave the meeting.
