Last month we had a DVD ("Fish From Burundi To Your Home") but unfortunately due to time constraints (and the lack of amplified speakers) the DVD was cut short, so we will have show that another day.
We also had a really big auction and heaps of fish came through including a massive Silver Shark (named “Bruce”) who is now swimming in one of my tanks. There were also a great array of plants and other goodies making it a great night to show up
This month we the committee bringing you series of short fish profile talks. These include catfish, cichlids and natives. We have received the latest Australian Aquarium Magazine to borrow from the library along with the CDAS trade table. The trade table has the usual assortment of foods and buffers for purchase for members only
.
The normal auction will take place again this month, so if you have excess healthy fish or a surplus of plants here is your opportunity to pass them on to other enthusiasts.
I would like to iterate that if you have any suggestions about what you would like to see the club do, how you would like to see the meetings structured etc, or even fish to be added to the conservation list PLEASE, approach one of the committee members and tell us. There are only 5 of us running the show so if you don't tell us what you want then we have to decide for you.
Our new venue, while great, has the committee a little challenged at how best to setup the place due to the layout of the room. This month we hope to address some of these issues by moving the shop, library and raffles near the door and the presentation, membership and auction lots in the usual spot. If this doesn't work we will try something else till we get it right.
I hope you all keep on with the club. Exciting changes have and will continue to occur and you get out what you put. So let's get this club more like a society and get involved.
So with all these benefits for members, why wouldn't you want to be a member? So we can still offer member services like the trade table, library books purchases, magazine subscriptions and conservation program, please renew your membership or try to encourage your friends to join.
Keep those fish a swimming dancing
First of all sorry for the late notice but the whole of the committee have head high with work commitments, I guess something has to pay for our fish habits *HAHA*. This month we're gettin' out the ugh boots, slippers and hot chocolate , with marshmallows... and have another attempt at watching a fishy dvd, this time with amplified speakers.
"Fish From Burundi To Your Home" is a documetary exploring Lake Tanganyika from the perspective of an ornamental fish catching, breeding and exporting business "Fishes of Burundi". It includes fish in thei natural habitat and step by step collecting, acclimatization and packing"
The normal auction and raffle will take place again this month, so if you have excess healthy fish or a surplus of plants here is your opportunity to pass them on to other enthusiasts. We are also currently selling tickets for mega raffle. The major prize will be a choice of canister filter (Donated by AoA) or fluid bed filter (kindly donated by Redtree) along with a pool of prizes . The tickets will be $2 each and we will run it over a couple months until we sell enough tickets. In the past you had to be present on the night for major prize but this time we are going to notify the winner and they one month to collect the prize before we redraw. However, all the minor prizes will go on the night so it is a good thing to continue to show at the meetings.

Last month Harry spoke his diving experiences and some mysteries of the deep like the blobfish, how cool was that freak of nature.
This month Mike (Skippy) will be talking about aquatic photography. He'll cover some general photography fundamentals, understanding the various settings on your cameras and some tips to hopefully lift your photographic strike rate.
The normal auction and raffle will take place again this month, so if you have excess healthy fish or a surplus of plants here is your opportunity to pass them on to other enthusiasts.
The mega raffle went off last month, with Paula taking home the fluid bed filter (kindly donated by Redtree Aquarium), with the winning ticket sold on the night. She will have to get back us with us how it goes, as I for one am curious how they work. Thanks to all those who have bought tickets. We ended up selling all the tickets, so a cool $200 was raised by that raffle. Raffles like these keep us going and go straight back into the club in order to provide services like the library, computer equipment and the like.
A big thanks goes out to Mike W (Mike's Fish) in Sydney, who kindly donated some Celestial Danio's (or galaxy rasbora's) for the conservation program. He sent them down to Rene and he has already managed to breed them. However, he was disappointed that he only saved 12 fry because he was treating them as a rasbora not a danio, LOL. Great work Rene your breeding ability never ceases to amaze me.
The AGM is fast approaching and Paula and Harry are standing down due to work commitments, so we need help otherwise the club will not run. So PLEASE approach one of the committee members and see if you can help us run the club next year. It is not very demanding, but as the saying goes "many hands make light work". There are only 5 of us running the show this year and if it drops to 3 it will be very hard to keep the club running smoothly.

This month the topic is a DIY night from Alex "What you can do with a used softdrink bottle" as I have not been able to get hold of anyone because I have been away. I will update the web site when I find out.
The normal auction and raffle will take place again this month, so if you have excess healthy fish or a surplus of plants here is your opportunity to pass them on to other enthusiasts.
The breeders awards is coming to a close for this year, so please get your forms in this month or the next for the final collation of who is breeders champion for the year. We haven't had too many entries as yet so you never know your luck.

Thanks to who showed for the committee meeting it was good to see new faces with fresh ideas. If you want a say in how your club is run please feel free to join the comittee. It is not overly taxing and takes up very little time per month.

Last month Alex did a DIY night from Alex "What you can do with a used softdrink bottle" and it was a great talk, well done Alex.
This month is the AGM and mega auction. After very brief AGM with the voting in of new members we will have an informal chat about what is happening in your tanks followed by the MEGA Auction. There are normally auction lot restrictions and normally no dry goods. These rules are thrown out the window and people can auction off there excess tanks, filters fish, plants and even electrical goods (although we would prefer as new as possible we do accept second hand goods as long as the seller states how long it has been used etc.).Followed by a larger than normal raffle will take place this month.
Also Memberships are due so you need to rejoin in order to sell anything on Tuesday. My computer blew up last week and the CDAS accounts are on it so I may not be able to get the financial statements prepared by the AGM. I am working on a replacement but it will take time.
The breeders awards finishes this month and the winner announced next month, so please get your forms in this month. We haven't had too many entries as yet so you never know your luck.

Last month Serkan spoke about his passion of Killifish and did one of the best presentations we have had. All those different species and colours made a lot of us think about trying to keep the underrated Killifish.
This month is the CDAS Christmas Party. There will be no talk, however... this is more of a social occasion. A time to reflect, talk to friends and generally enjoy ourselves.
There is one thing that has never been done before. The club is buying fish and plants, some very hard to get and rare, and these are going to be put into raffles (one member only one open to all) and the general auction. It is a way of thanking all members of CDAS and provides another reason to become and stay a financial member of CDAS.
There will also be goodie boxes for the members. These will be full of lollies, chocolate and all things that are yummy... (must show your current CDAS membership card or receipt to get one). You can also join\renew on the night to be
eligible.
Some of the fish and plants we hope to get are:
FISH:
"MacCulloch's Rainbowfish Skull Ck"
Melanotaenia splendida tatei "Desert Rainbowfish"
Pseudomugil tenellus "Delicate Blue-eye"
Various Tetras
Corys
PLANTS:
A rainforest garden (lots of plants on wood)
Anubias
Aponogeton
Bolbitis
Cryptocoryne
Echinodorus (Amazon sword)
Come on the night to see what's there.

Last month was the CDAS Christmas Party. We had our very firs Major Raffle and Auction sponsored heavily by the Club, as a way of thanking all members of CDAS and provides another reason to become and stay a financial member of CDAS.
This month we have a quick Extraordinary General Meeting to bring the constitution up to date and following that, MJay is doing a talk on how to setup a CO2 injected planted tank for the best results. This should be a great talk as I personally have seen the results of CO2 tanks both good an bad so I am looking forward to it.
For the usual stuff:

Please return any books you have borrowed so others may use it. If you have any enquires or suggestions please see the Librarian.

Food and Beverage
An array of food and beverages is available to purchase from The Harmonie German Club.
Other Notes
While last month there was a more casual event, it was noted that a couple of members, or there guests, had indulged in too much Christmas cheer. This WILL NOT be tolerated in future and the offending person will be asked to leave. The club is for the members not for the individuals.
The committee has the right to eject or not allow any person who is heavily under the influence and makes it uncomfortable for any other member. Any unsavory behaviour will be dealt with and the person (if a member) may lose their membership. Feel free to have a drink or two but please consider that we are a family club and to think of others.
Also there has been an steady increase in noise level which is making it hard to auction goods off and for the presenter to talk. If you feel the need to have a chat please wait until the break or leave the room as a curtsy.

Date: Tuesday 16th February 2010
Time: Meeting room doors open for members at 7:50pm for an 8pm sharp start
Place: The Harmonie German Club - 49 Jerrabomberra Avenue, Narrabundah
Last Meeting:
We had an extraordinary meeting to address a few constitutional issues and to refresh some of the by-laws. These changes were necessary given the somewhat smaller club that we have theses days as opposed to the glory days of years gone by. In summary:
Now that we have updated the constitution and bylaws we can get on with keeping and promoting responsible fish keeping.
Following the business end of the meeting we had MJay give a presentation on CO2 and planted aquarium. It was very informative and very useful at demystifying how to set it up correctly.
Whats On:
This month we will be doing some (depending on time) species profiles of fish that are on the conservation list with a aim at promoting the breeders award/conservation program to get everyone involved. Laurie will be giving a presentation on Chalinochromis sp. Ndoboi and African Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika. We also hope to have time for a presentation to humble endler or another fish. We might also have time to give you a quick run down again about how to get these wonderful club sponsored fish.

I am the custodian of a breeding colony of Metriaclima livingstonii in my tanks waiting for someone with suitable cichlid experience (and breeder’s points) to have a go at breeding them. We are also looking to get hold of the red finned mccullochi and Honey blue eyes.
The list has become quite large so now are looking to add things in a more dynamic\opportunistic fashion. This mean if something uncommon and rare comes onto the wholesaler’s lists the committee may just decide to add them. Members only Trade Table
A committee member will be only too willing to assist you with the purchase of all your dry goods needs.
Mini Auction
Both Members & Visitors are all eligible to bid on lots. Please remember a fast auction is a good auction so if we can please keep the noise down.
Also, there is a change in the check in process for those bringing auction lots, the doors will open 7:30pm. This is to assist me (or whomever does it) with the data entry of auction lots into the auction spreadsheet. If at all possible could you please fill in your auction lots and number your bags before you get there to speed the process up so I may be able to keep up with what is happening. The forms are available on the website.
Mini Raffle
Raffle tickets will be available to purchase from the trade table before the meeting and during the break. We will have our usual range of dry and new electrical goods and maybe some fish as well
Breeders Award
Please hand in any breeder’s forms you have completed to get those all important points to get you closer to getting some of club sourced species.
Species Conservation Project
Thus far the endlers and celestial danios have been very successful and a heap of fish have been added to the list. For a full listing go to the web site and check it out
I am the custodian of a breeding colony of Metriaclima livingstonii in my tanks waiting for someone with suitable cichlid experience (and breeder’s points) to have a go at breeding them.
Still feel free to come and see one of the committee members at the break and we will see what we can do.
